DIsaster Preparedness Or Recovery

You’ve plotted your evacuation route, prepared your home against the external forces of the storm, and packed a supply kit to take with you on the road. But have you taken the time to safeguard all of the important electronic devices in your home that will be left behind?

Before leaving your home you should ensure all electronic devices in your home (including the computer) are unplugged from their power source. If you are in a low-lying area and expect flooding, move your computer components to a more elevated location if possible, such as an attic or a tall bookshelf.

When a natural disaster strikes, although you may have time to move your home computer, you may not have sufficient time to backup all the important documents stored on the hard drive. In the event a disaster is imminent, the best protection against losing all your data is to be prepared in advance.

A portable, inexpensive external hard drive is one way you can quickly back up all of your files to take with you. Some versions of Microsoft Windows even have effective backup built right into them. Windows Backup can automatically back up your data to an external hard drive, making it easy to bring a copy with you. Alternatively, most external hard drives come with intuitive backup software as well, offering one-button backup options for most models.

A program called Rebit also enables simple backups. Once Rebit is installed and your external hard drive is plugged in, it will make an initial full backup of your computer. This way, if you lost all of your data, you could restore it in a matter of minutes. After your full backup, every time you plug in your external hard drive, the software will do an incremental backup. This means it will back up only the files that have changed since you the last time you backed up. Therefore, after your initial full backup, any backup thereafter will be extremely quick.

About the software:

Software applications and programs usually cannot be backed up to an external source (unless they claim to be “portable”), so you’ll need to store a copy of the setup file or installation CDs for them. With modern computers featuring large hard drives, it is no longer necessary to keep the CDs around when you can easily store them in digital form.

ISO Recorder is a small, free program that can be used to create digital copies of CDs and DVDs that can be stored on a hard drive. Modern editions of Windows have burning functionality built-in, and you can convert these copies (or “images”) back into CDs within minutes. If your computer does not offer this feature, Slysoft’s free Virtual Clonedrive can be used to run the discs straight from your hard drive, without having to burn them.

Consider the Web as a backup:

If you would rather not hassle with an external piece of hardware, you can always choose online backup services, such as Carbonite or Mozy. With this type of service all you have to do is install their software, then tag the folders or files you want backed up. After that, the files are uploaded (using your Internet connection) to their remote facility. This is useful since your data will not actually be stored at your location. You can retrieve your files from any computer simply by installing their software and logging in to your username.

Your laptop is in need of repairs. Do you take it in or do you buy a new one? Deciding this question depends on the scope of repairs. A Laptop repair is great option if the cost is relatively small and the repairs are easy to do. There are many laptop repair centers available to work on all laptops and more showing up all the time.

Manufacturer are not the only place to get repair parts for laptops. Authorized repair centers are available and with the use of interchangeable part a parts company can use a different manufacturer device in most laptops without having to have all the brands on hand. A laptop with a warranty can be replace locally.

Repairs that cannot be accomplished at the repair center can still be sent in to the manufacturer by the service center or yourself, the laptop owner. The repairs that are common on a laptop are things like viruses, hard drive failure, video failure and sound failure. There can be an array of problems but with the install of generic parts or interchangeable parts the repair center can have on hand a replacement from another manufacturer that will go into your laptop and work well.

A damaged operating system will cause the laptop to have lots of problems. In some cases the operating system needs to be replaced. In other incidents it can be fixed using the manufacturers repair software. A good repair technician will be able to fix the problem with out the need to replace the hard drive. In some cases however the damage is too great on the drive and a new drive will have to be installed onto the laptop

Laptops have one internal drive and it can be accessed and replaced in a few moments as far as the install of the actual hardware is concerned. The data on a hard drive can be backed up or transferred to the new drive before the replacement drive is installed. If the drive is bad and the data is to far gone, corrupt, than these methods will not be possible and the data will be lost.

After the data is backed up to a new drive or backup unit the old data can be moved to the new drive which is or will be put into the laptop. There are several problems a drive can obtain, bad sectors, corrupt data or power loss which will all cause the system to not function properly. The bad drive can be changed out for another in an easy to do procedure. The replacing of a drive is not difficult but the install of the partition information and operating system can be. This would be a good time to use a skilled technician to do the final install of the software and make sure it is working correctly.

Understanding the procedure and what is involved with changing out a hard drive of a laptop is the job of a technical support technician, those of which you can find at any computer store. The options that control the way the operating system works and what kind of format it needs is a question best answered by a trained technician.

The motherboard on a laptop has most of the components integrated right into the same circuit board all of the main circuits are connected to. Separating the devices is not available so if the motherboard fails or a component on the motherboard fails then the entire motherboard will have to be replaced. Most of the time this option will need to have an identical part to replace it and not another brand found on the shelf in a computer store. Weighting the cost is important when the laptop repair is great option. So take into consideration if the laptop can run it will be useful to someone, it just depends on what value you place on it and what the cost will be to get a new one, it may be worth the repair.
